FoodPrints Celebrates Earth Month With Purpose and Joy

For our FoodPrints team, Earth Month is more than just a celebration—it’s a call to action. This April, our teachers, students, and families came together to care for the planet by rebuilding a school garden, eating local produce, and learning about how to care for the planet. In the classroom and in the garden, the FoodPrints community celebrated Earth Month with purpose and joy.
FoodPrints Staff Rebuild the Marie Reed Garden
FoodPrints staff gathered in mid-April with tools, lumber, and determination to give the Marie Reed garden a fresh start. Led by our Garden Team, staff removed old garden beds, built new beds, and prepped soil. They then filled the new beds with fresh soil and planted spring seedlings. Students came back to Marie Reed after spring break with a brand new garden just in time to celebrate Earth Day!
Families at CW Harris and Burroughs Enjoy FoodPrints Recipes at Earth Day Events
Families at CW Harris and Burroughs elementary schools joined in the Earth Day fun by tasting FoodPrints recipes. At CW Harris, families sampled Colorful Kale Salad and were invited to take the recipe and apples home with them. At Burroughs, families tasted Pasta Salad with Ginger Soy Dressing and took the recipe home. These joyful events brought our school communities together around ingredients from local farmers, delicious food, and a shared love for the planet.
Students at Whittier Learn How To Be Stewards of the Earth During Their FoodPrints Classes
At Whittier, third grade students practiced real-world ways to protect the planet and become young environmental stewards. During their lesson on “Taking Care of the Planet,” students learned about the 5Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. To practice “Reuse,” students watered plants using yogurt containers that had been cleaned out. Try this at home by saving yogurt containers, washing them, carefully poking a hole in the bottom, and voilá, you have a reused watering can.
Through an action-packed Earth Month, the FoodPrints community demonstrated how caring for the earth can start right at school!
